Prop Guns Safety Protocols on Movie and Drama Sets!

prop gun

A prop firearm is a weapon that is designed to fire harmless, low-powered projectiles. These guns are made of plastic or foam and they are not capable of firing bullets. The projectiles that the gun fires are usually spheres or discs.

These guns can be used for multiple different purposes including acting as a costume accessory, training, theatrical performances and as an alternative to firearms. Recently commercial props have been seen in many movies where they are used for special effects such as using them in the air during scenes where flying is involved or on set during explosions and gunfire sounds.

Props in Movies and Dramas

Prop guns are used in movies and sets to give the effect of something they don't have time to make on set. Nowadays, these weapons are usually made from plastic, wood or metal. Props can be easily concealed with a bulge under an actor's shirt or jacket. These weapons might be used for close-up shots where the actor has to hold it in one hand and shoot with their other hand.

In some scenes, these guns can be loaded with fake bullets so that there is no risk of injury and no damage to props on set. These guns come in all shapes and sizes including handguns, rifles, machine pistols, shotguns and bazookas. When guns are made for a movie, they have to have the features of the actual weapon in real life.

These guns are used with fake bullets that look real, smell and feel like the real thing. The gun itself is nothing spectacular and has been painted to look like it's metal rather than plastic. There are many different ways to make props, but there is no standard way to do so because it all depends on what kind of gun you want to make.

Safety Measures to Use Props:

On set, weapons are subject to strict safety and inspection standards. Hundreds of hours of training and education for armorers, grips and stunt coordinators prepares them for any dangerous task that may come their way.

  • All firearms will be inspected by a department armorer when they are unloaded from storage with the padlock unbroken - before being loaded again with blanks or live rounds of ammunition.

  • All firearms should be checked by the armorer on set before they are loaded into a weapon rack (those racks must have locks) or placed in an area where they may be touched by actors.

  • Firearms must not be left unattended at any time without intervening measures such as locked weapon racks, or other steps to prevent unauthorized use.

Everyone’s Interest in Props!

People have been interested in guns for centuries, and have always wanted realistic prop guns to go with their costumes. Historically, there has never been a shortage of props to satisfy this desire. However, over the last few years prop makers are having a difficult time sourcing materials like wood and metal.

If they can't find the right material they need for a prop firearm or other prop replica, it may lead to that gun needing to be "retired". This is why many people are now turning to cheaper options like plastic guns or airsoft guns as an alternative. The 2016 Ghostbusters movie has been a massive success.

This, combined with the fact that there has never been a better time for people to dress up in costumes, has led to an increase in demand for replica prop guns. In some cases, these props have been rented out or leased from prop houses. In other cases, people are buying new replica guns of their favorite weapons from their favorite movies.
